Halloween Safety

Trick or Treating should be one of the great adventures of Halloween for kids! Some towns have organized a “Harvest” Festival so kids can go Trick-or-Treating safely. However, there are still many communities that have door to door trick or treaters. Two Rivers Public Health Department would like to share some tips to help keep your child safe during this Halloween holiday.

Small children should never be allowed to go out alone on Halloween. Always make sure an older sibling or adult is with them.
  • Instruct your child to never enter the home of a stranger or get into their car.
  • Encourage older children to stay together as a group if they going out to trick or treat without an adult.
  • Remind your child to stop only at familiar houses in your own neighborhood unless they are accompanied by an adult.
  • Let your children know it is not safe to cut through back alleys and fields. Make sure they stay in well lighted places.
  • Help your child pick out a costume that will be safe. Make sure it is fire proof, and the eye holes are large enough for good vision. If you can, use make-up instead of a mask.
  • Be sure that any props such as a knife or pitchfork are soft enough so if fallen on, it won’t cause injury to them or others.
  • Treat your kids to a special Halloween dinner before going out and they will be less likely to eat the candy they collect before you have a chance to check it.
  • Know what activities your child will be attending, such as a party, school or mall function.
  • Make sure you set a time for them to return home.
  • Instruct your children that animal cruelty and destroying property are not “tricks” and are not acceptable. Both are punishable by law and will not be tolerated.
